Most applications rely upon an n-tier architecture wherein the application processing and data management capabilities are physically separated. Here, Ben Johnson argues that with recent hardware improvements, this architecture is no longer necessary – the database can run within the application server. He describes the benefits of SQLite, which implements this model and affords low read/write latency and strong developer ergonomics. He also covers how Litestream rectifies the limitations of SQLite by enabling users to replicate to S3 or live replicate between databases.
