While Kubernetes (k8s) can enable application scalability, portability, and security among other benefits, it can also lead to high compute expenses and management overhead. To make k8s more efficient and cost-effective, AWS has released Karpenter – an OSS cluster autoscaler. Karpenter eliminates the need for users to dynamically adjust their clusters’ compute capacity with EC2 Auto Scaling groups and the k8s Cluster Autoscaler. Instead, Karpenter will automatically provide just-in-time compute resources to support applications by observing events within the k8s cluster and sending commands to the compute service (e.g. EC2) to launch and terminate nodes in such a way as to minimize latency and infrastructure costs.
