This week, Looker OSS’ed Malloy, an experimental query language designed to make data computation simpler by presenting new abstractions that are more concise and easier to reason about than SQL. Since Malloy computations are modular, composable, and reusable, users can model their data as they conduct analysis. Malloy includes other features which might help data practitioners build reliable analytics products, such as rich metadata and nested structures. Looker has also released a VSCode plugin that effectively transforms VSCode into a query tool that users can leverage to create models, write queries, and develop visualizations and dashboards.
