Although democratizing access to data has several benefits, self-service tools may introduce inconsistent metrics when different teams craft different metrics with different data sources and pipelines. Inconsistent metrics can negatively impact decision making, reduce the performance of ML models, and degrade trust in data. As such, Uber recently built uMetric, a metric standardization platform that addresses definition authoring, governance, quality, and access control management. uMetric also includes capabilities such as smart algorithmic dedupe of equivalent SQL queries and relies on Verification Committees of experts who resolve discrepancies in definitions of business critical metrics.
