For several years, data practitioners have debated what skills, including technical chops and domain expertise, are necessary to excel in analytics roles. In this blog, Anna Filippova observes that this debate seems to be culminating, including in discussions about the tools that data practitioners use. She argues that any analytics role requires engineering thinking but ultimately advocates for more “purple people” – generalists, who can apply a set of methods and technologies as well as critical thinking and problem-solving skills to a wide domain of challenges and opportunities.
