In February, Toby Sykes, the Global Head of Data Engineering at Quantum Black, became the first data engineer to appear on DataIQ 100, an annual list recognizing data practitioners in the UK. In this post, Toby Sykes and a team of Principal Data Engineers at QuantumBlack reflect upon how the data engineering role has evolved. They describe how data engineers enable more agile and scalable data science and analytics practices, including through solid data foundations and by providing fast, safe, and compliant access to data. In addition, they discuss how the data engineering skillset has evolved (e.g., to include more software engineering and DevOps practices) and the shift towards OSS data tools and platforms.
