Visual localization – wherein the position and orientation of a camera within a scene is estimated – and Structure from Motion (SfM) – wherein the 3D structure of a scene using 2D images is estimated- are two key challenges in autonomous systems. However, public datasets for visual localization and SfM are often formatted differently, which may stymie research efforts. To enable researchers to use public datasets and advance visual localization and SfM approaches, researchers from Naver Labs have released the kapture repository, which includes a new pivot file format; set of Python tools to load, save, and convert datasets; and a set of public datasets. The Kapture data format can be used to store sensor parameters and raw sensor data and computed data, including 2D features and 3D reconstructions.
