Machine learning systems may include uncertainty estimates (including distributions or confidence intervals) associated with predictions. However, there are various ways to produce uncertainty estimates – and ML engineers may not know which method to use. To help model developers identify the best approach to generate accurate and well-calibrated uncertainty estimates, Youngseog Chung and other CMU researchers open sourced Uncertainty Toolbox. This Python toolbox can be used to compute several metrics that quantify uncertainty (e.g. including to measure accuracy, average calibration, adversarial group calibration, sharpness, and proper scoring rules); visualize predictive uncertainties, confidence bands, and calibration and sharpness of UQ methods; and improve the calibration of predictors.
